1Accepting these terms
These terms are an agreement between you and Econa. By using founderscreen.org or econa.net, taking the Entrepreneur Wellbeing Check, using an Econa Lab or joining the Econa Village, you accept them. If you do not accept them, please do not use the services.
- You must be 18 or older.
- You must be able to enter into a binding agreement, and not barred from these services under any applicable law.
- The Check is built for entrepreneurs — people who are self-employed, with or without employees, including those who acquired or inherited a business rather than founding one. Anyone may read this site; the instrument is only meaningful for that group, and it is only validated for it.
Econa's services are available internationally. You are responsible for complying with the laws that apply where you are.
2What Econa provides
- The Entrepreneur Wellbeing Check — a seven-question screening instrument, free to every entrepreneur, everywhere, always.
- A personalized action plan based on your result.
- The Econa Labs — free.
- A referral to Connected Mind where a result indicates a clinical assessment would help.
- The Econa Village — the one optional paid membership, which adds progress tracking, community and programs. It adds to the free tier; it does not gate it.
3This is screening, not medical care
This is the most important section on the page.
- Econa is not a healthcare provider. Using these services does not create a clinician–patient relationship.
- The Check is a screening instrument, not a diagnostic tool. A result is a signal worth taking seriously, not a diagnosis.
- Nothing on this site or in the Labs is medical advice, and none of it should replace consulting a qualified professional.
- Never delay seeking medical care, or disregard advice you have been given, because of an Econa result.
- Screening carries error. False positive and false negative results occur within accepted statistical limits, and cut-off scores may differ for different kinds of entrepreneurs and under different economic conditions.
The trauma screener
The Trauma Lab uses the EPC-PTSD-5, an Econa adaptation. In Dr. Freeman's words: “The items are evidence-based. The instrument has not been validated and also there is no existing validated instrument to detect PTSD among entrepreneurs.” The life-event and symptom questions are drawn from the widely validated PC-PTSD-5. Treat any result from it as a prompt to speak to a licensed clinician, and nothing more.
4Accounts, and using Econa without one
- An account is optional. You can take the Check, get your result and get your action plan without one.
- Without an account, results are not retained — you must request your report at the time you take the Check, or it is gone. We will warn you before that happens.
- With an account, keep your credentials confidential. You are responsible for what happens under it. Tell us promptly if you think it has been compromised.
- Give us accurate information. An inaccurate answer produces a meaningless score, which helps nobody.
- You may close your account at any time.
5Acceptable use
You agree not to:
- Break any applicable law, or infringe anyone's rights.
- Use the services to screen another person without their knowledge and consent, or to pressure anyone into being screened.
- Use Econa results, or the fact of someone's participation, in hiring, firing, investment due diligence, or any other decision made about a person. The Check exists to help entrepreneurs, not to be used against them.
- Attempt to identify any individual from de-identified or aggregated data.
- Scrape, harvest, reverse engineer, probe or interfere with the services or their security.
- Upload malware, impersonate anyone, or harass others in any community space.
- Resell, sublicense or commercially exploit access to the Labs or the Village.
We may suspend or end access that breaches these terms, or that puts other users at risk.
6Intellectual property
What is yours to use freely
The Entrepreneur Wellbeing Check instrument is in the public domain. It is not proprietary. It was placed in the public domain deliberately, so that anyone may use it and its reach is not limited by who can pay. You do not need our permission to use it.
What remains Econa's
The Econa Labs and their content, the site, the software, the FounderScreen and Econa names and marks, and the design of this site are owned by Econa or its licensors. You get a limited, personal, non-transferable, revocable license to use them for their intended purpose. That license does not let you copy, adapt, redistribute or build a competing service from them.
What you send us
You keep ownership of anything you submit. You give Econa a license to use it to operate and improve the services, and — only where you have separately agreed — to include de-identified data in research.
7Donations and Village membership
- The Check, the action plan and the Labs are free. Nothing in this section applies to them.
- Donations are processed by a third-party payment processor under its own terms. Donations are generally non-refundable.
- Free access to the FounderScreen Initiative is fiscally sponsored, and donations toward it are tax deductible to the extent allowable by law. Your receipt will name the sponsoring organization.
- Econa Village membership renews for the period you selected unless cancelled. You may cancel at any time; cancellation takes effect at the end of the paid period. If you stop subscribing you keep access to all the basic features — you lose the member benefits, not the Check.
- Prices may change. We will tell you before a change affects a renewal.
8Third-party services
Some things are run by other organizations: payment processing, and Connected Mind where you are referred for clinical assessment. Their own terms and privacy policies govern what they do. We choose partners carefully, but we are not responsible for their services or for the content of any site we link to.
Links to crisis and treatment resources are given as a public good. Econa does not endorse, employ or supervise the organizations behind them, and does not receive payment for listing them.
9Disclaimers
The services are provided “as is” and “as available”, without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose and non-infringement. We do not warrant that the services will be uninterrupted, error-free, or that any result will be accurate for your particular circumstances.
Some jurisdictions do not allow the exclusion of certain warranties. Where that is so, the exclusions above apply only as far as the law permits, and your statutory rights are unaffected.
10Limitation of liability
To the fullest extent the law allows, Econa and its officers, employees, faculty and contributors are not liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential or punitive damages, or for lost profits, data or goodwill, arising from your use of the services.
Our total aggregate liability arising out of these terms is limited to the greater of the amount you paid Econa in the twelve months before the claim, or one hundred US dollars.
Nothing here excludes liability that cannot lawfully be excluded — including for death or personal injury caused by negligence, for fraud, or for any right you hold as a consumer under mandatory local law.
11Indemnification
You agree to indemnify Econa against claims, losses and reasonable legal costs arising from your breach of these terms, your misuse of the services, or your violation of any law or of anyone else's rights. This does not apply to the extent a claim arises from Econa's own act or omission.
12Governing law and disputes
These terms are governed by the laws of the State of California, without regard to its conflict-of-laws rules.
If something goes wrong, tell us first. Most problems are solved that way, and we would rather fix it than argue about it. If we cannot resolve it within 60 days, the dispute will be settled by binding arbitration on an individual basis, and not as a class action, in California or by remote hearing.
This clause yields to your local law. If you are a consumer in the UK, the EU or the EEA — or anywhere else whose mandatory rules give you the right to bring proceedings in your own courts or to opt out of arbitration — those rights apply and this section does not take them away.
13Changes and termination
We may update these terms. The effective date at the top will change, and we will flag significant changes prominently. Continuing to use the services after a change means you accept the updated terms.
We may modify, suspend or discontinue any part of the services. You may stop using them at any time. The sections on intellectual property, disclaimers, liability, indemnification and disputes survive the end of this agreement.
If any provision is held unenforceable, the rest stays in force.
