About Econa & Dr. Freeman
A center of excellence at the intersection of entrepreneurship, neuroscience, wellbeing, and mental health.
Econa exists because entrepreneurs are wired differently — and that difference deserves to be understood, celebrated, and protected. Dr. Michael A. Freeman, the Econa team, Econa's academic colleagues, and researchers around the world have spent decades building the evidence base that proves it. This is the story of that work — and of the community that carries it forward.

The Name & The Symbol
Two origins. One name. A dual heritage that is scientifically precise and reflects mythologically resonant ancient wisdom.
E · C · O · N · A — The Big Five Personality Traits
And the Greek origin: Econa also references the island in Greek mythology where Psyche — the personification of the human spirit and soul — was born. Psyche married Eros, the god of love, and they had a daughter Hedone, the goddess of joy and delight. Psyche gave her name to psychiatry and psychology; together Psyche, Eros and Hedone represent the foundations of mental health and wellbeing. It is a name that lives at the intersection of science and soul, data and humanity. Entrepreneurs are not just economic actors. They are human beings whose inner life deserves to be addressed with the same rigor that we bring to understanding businesses and markets.
The Torch: Econa's flame icon is more than a logo element. It represents the light that entrepreneurs carry forward — the illuminating force of vision, the cost of burning bright without burning out. It is a reminder that the same fire that drives innovation must be tended, not consumed.
What We Stand For
Mission
Econa helps entrepreneurs to flourish and prosper. Together with our team, academic colleagues, and research partners, we support entrepreneurs and advance science. We generate, validate, and translate research on the entrepreneurial mind — building tools, programs, and partnerships that protect the resilience, performance, wellbeing and mental health of those who build our world.
Vision
We envision an ecosystem where accelerators, investors, universities, and stakeholders treat entrepreneur wellbeing and mental health not as an afterthought, but as a competitive and ethical imperative.
Brand Promise
Every Econa program, resource, and conversation is grounded in peer-reviewed research. We do not traffic in wellness trends. We deliver validated frameworks that deliver measurable change, and then we measure outcomes. All Econa-supported research is conducted with the aim of accelerating improvements in entrepreneur resilience, performance, wellbeing and mental health.
The People Behind the Work
Econa is a collective effort. A rare convergence of clinical psychiatry, research psychology, entrepreneurial experience, and operational excellence — built with academic colleagues and advisors who share the mission.

In Memoriam
Aaron Swartz
November 8, 1986 — January 11, 2013
Aaron Swartz was a prodigy, a programmer, an activist, and an entrepreneur who co-created RSS at age 14, co-founded Reddit and the Creative Commons, and devoted his life to the free flow of information. He was, in many ways, the embodiment of the entrepreneurial mind — brilliant, passionate, intensely driven, and acutely sensitive to the weight of the world he was trying to change.
Aaron's death from suicide at 26 was a devastating reminder that the same traits that make entrepreneurs extraordinary — their intensity, their sense of mission, their refusal to accept the world as it is — can also carry profound psychological risk without the right support structures.
Dr. Freeman has spoken about the personal impact of Aaron's story as a crystallizing moment — confirmation that the research needed to move faster, the tools needed to reach further, and the stigma around entrepreneur mental health needed to end. Econa is, in part, an answer to that moment.
"The world loses when it loses its builders. Econa exists so that fewer are lost and more are empowered to reach their full potential."
Edvard Munch's The Sun fills the end wall of the Aula at the University of Oslo — the hall where the Nobel Peace Prize was presented for more than forty years. A sunrise behind a ceremony that honors what people build. The man who endowed those prizes was an entrepreneur too.
He held hundreds of patents, built an industrial company across a dozen countries, wrote plays and poetry, and founded the Nobel Prize to advance world peace and to elevate our shared humanity.
He also, most likely, lived with bipolar disorder — with big mood swings, in an era before effective medication was invented.
The traits that carry an entrepreneur to the top of their field and the traits that put them at risk are often the same traits. That is not a modern discovery. It is the whole reason Econa exists.
